Luster is painted in a striking palette of deep aubergine, magenta, dark indigo and russet brown set against a robin’s egg blue sky. Distant trees in the background fade into layers of violet, red and earthy brown. The radiant sun in the center of the piece casts a white-yellow and golden orange glow through thinning branches—onto the surface of the water below. Deep navy and burgundy reflections of tree trunks and branches ripple through the calm water, leading the eye toward the sparkling gold paint that changes with the angle of view.
